Title: Grisha Verse #1 – Shadow and Bone
Author: Leigh Bardugo
Genre: Fiction / Fantasy / YA
First published: 2012
Edition: Kindle e-book
Going into this book I did not have any particular expectations, but I was looking forward to reading it as I had heard a lot of good things. This was my first book by Leigh Bardugo and I actually enjoyed it a lot.
This is YA fantasy and it definitely reads like that. The writing flows well, reads away very easily and the plot does not get too deep or complicated. It was very easy to relate to the main character Alina and the bond she has with her childhood friend Mal. I liked the world building, though I do wish it was a bit more extensive.
I was surprised when I finished this book, because it took me no time at all. The story clearly kept me engaged and I wanted to know what happened next, but on finishing it I also felt that it did not quite go deep enough for my liking. I just wanted a little bit more from it and in the end I was not blown away by it.
However, I do think this was a good place to start with Bardugo’s writing. I definitely enjoyed it and I do want to continue this series and explore this Grisha Verse a bit more.
