Title: The Lord of the Rings #1 – The Return of the King
Author: J R R Tolkien
Genre: Fiction / Fantasy
First published: 1955
Edition: paperback, published by Unwin Paperbacks in 1986
Of the three books in The Lord of the Rings series this final book is my least favourite by quite a margin. I found it as a whole very dense and simply not that interesting. It felt a bit anticlimactic.
I hate feeling like I am glad that I have finished a book, but I did not really get on with this one that well. The writing was just so dense and elaborate, it made me tired reading a page! Sure, as a whole, the series tells an incredible story, but whereas I felt that with The Two Towers Tolkien had found a slightly lighter, more digestible note, in this final book I just felt dragged down.
I understand why it is a classic in the genre, but I really did not enjoy this anywhere near as much as The Two Towers, which is still my favourite in the trilogy.
