I was reluctant to pick up this book, because of all the hype, but I felt I had put it off enough. Now I wish I had read it earlier. This is a gem of a book.
Not only does this novel explore the problems that black communities throughout the US are facing, but it also explores family and friendship ties in a very honest real way. I loved the characters and the dynamics between them. The conflict within our main character Starr felt realistic and honest.
I loved the writing and it was simply a joy to read. One of the best Young Adult books I have read. It was hard hitting, yet had a light touch. I am duly impressed.
