Book Thoughts: Ruin and Rising (Leigh Bardugo)

Bardugo, Leigh - Grishaverse 3 Ruin and Rising

Title:  Grishaverse #3 – Ruin and Rising
Author: Leigh Bardugo
Genre: Fiction / Fantasy / YA   Pages: 350
First published: 2014
Edition: 2018 Paperback edition, published by Hodder and Stoughton

Alina will have to forge new alliances and put aside old rivalries as she and Mal race to find the last of Morozova’s amplifiers. But as she begins to unravel the Darkling’s secrets, she reveals a past that will forever alter her understanding of the bond they share and the power she wields. The firebird is the one thing that stands between Ravka and destruction—and claiming it could cost Alina the very future she’s fighting for.

So with this book I have finished the Grisha trilogy and this final book is by far my favourite of the three.

I feel Bardugo’s writing and storytelling reached a maturity that was lacking before and  I enjoyed it much more for it. The second half of the book especially really picks up the pace and is action packed.

I felt much more connected to our main characters in this book than the previous two and I felt like I finally got to know Alina and Mal. The Darkling remains an intriguing character and I loved that Alina’s connection to him is so complicated.

There was some unexpected twists and I absolutely loved the ending. I could not have asked for a better conclusion to this series. There may even have been a tear or two.

I will definitely read more books by Leigh Bardugo in the future.
