Book Thoughts: The Raven King (Maggie Stiefvater)

Stiefvater, Maggie - The Raven Cycle 4 The Raven King

★★★★★★☆

Title: The Raven King (The Raven Cycle #4)
Author: Maggie Stiefvater
Genre: Fiction / YA / Paranormal    Pages: 438
First published: 2016
Edition: Paperback, published by Scholastic in 2016

For years, Gansey has been on a quest to find a lost king. One by one, he’s drawn others into his mission: Ronan, who steals from dreams; Adam, whose life is no longer his own; Noah, whose life is no longer a life; and Blue, who loves Gansey … and is certain she is destined to kill him.

There was something mysterious and absolutely random about this final book in The Raven Cycle and you know what, I kind of loved it for that. I know a lot of people struggled with how the series ended here, but I was completely into the vibe it was giving me.

Not everything about this conclusion makes sense. In fact, a lot of it does not in the slightest, but I found in reading it that I really did not mind. I loved how matter-a-fact the writing was concerning all these things that did not neatly tie up in a bow.  I did not need it to make sense logically. I just needed to be compelled by it and I so was! The writing held me spellbound. The characters are just wonderfully developed, although at times I felt Blue herself could have been a bit more interesting. The friendships are intricate and I enjoyed the slew of random side characters.

I can understand that people would be disappointed with this book. If you wanted a tidy ending, this may not be what you had been hoping for, but I am more than happy.

Overall, I feel this is such an original series that I am very happy to have read it.

6 out of 7 stars
