Wow. Yes, this was exactly what I wanted from the second book in this duology. It was dark, it was compelling, it was almost perfect.

I really enjoyed the first book, This Savage Song, but this one was definitely stronger for me. Of course the scene was already set in the first book and now the author went one step darker and more ominous and it was all the better for it in my opinion.

During their time apart August and Kate have each been fighting their own battles. They have changed so much from the teenagers we met at the beginning of the first book, especially August. I really enjoyed their character arcs. I like where both characters went and how the story ended. It made sense to me.

Some of the twists in this book were a bit too obvious and I felt like the characters were a bit naive sometimes to not see the twist coming. I guess I also wanted a bit more from the world building, but that is a minor complaint.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed reading this duology and I will definitely read more by this author in the future.
