Off The Grid Readathon Diary, day 1

Off The Grid Readathon – day 1 of 3 (Friday)

08.21 – Just had breakfast (only a breakfast bar as I am not at all hungry this morning) and I am about to go and feed my ponies and to clean their paddock. After that, I will start my reading day. The timing of this Readathon is great, as I do not have much on this weekend! I have guests coming in my Airbnb, so I will be listening to some of my audio Marrs, John - The Onebook whilst preparing it. My audio book at the moment is I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings my Maya Andalou. I really enjoy listening to that, but audio books take me a while, so I have not put it on the Readathon TBR.

The first book I have put on my TBR is The One by John Marrs. I started it yesterday afternoon and already managed to read a third, so I hope I will be able to read the rest today. It’s such an intriguing concept. I think literally all the characters make me feel unsettled in some small or big way.

The other book is Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams, which is on my Summer TBR. I have heard such good things about that one.

My daughter has school until noon today, after which she is on her summer holidays. We meant to go and visit family and friends  in England during the holidays, but due to COVID we have decided not to for now. That makes me kind of sad, but we will do our best to make her holiday fun anyway.

I will update once I had the time to do some reading.

10.03 – I got to around the halfway mark in The One. Still enjoying it. It is interesting to see the choices the characters are making. I wonder where these individual stories will go. I have not read a thriller in a while and though so far this is not immediately 200717‘thrilling’, it is definitely ominous and has a undercurrent of unpleasant tension.

Just having a coffee and I will read a bit more. I do need to train my ponies as well, so I am just trying to figure out whether to do one this morning and one this afternoon or leave both till after lunch.

14.00 – It’s chore time, so I am stepping away from the book – I repeat, I am stepping away from the book! Truly, this book is compulsive reading! I am 81% in and I am confident I will finish it today, but I have done enough reading for now. I need to get some sh!t done today.

My opinion at 80% is that this is a pretty awesome book. Maybe it won’t make my favourites list, but it’s definitely a good read. I am curious to see how it wraps things up in the end.

17.25 – I just finished the book! The ending pretty good, though it did not blow my mind. Now I need to decide whether this is a 5-star or a 6-star book. It was definitely a good one… But how good?

17.54 – I decided on 5 out of 7 stars for The One in the end. I really enjoyed it and it was a very compelling easy read, but I do not think it will stay with me for a long time. We will be having dinner in a moment and after that I will probably make a start on Queenie by Carty-Williams, Candice - QueenieCandice Carty-Williams.

21.40 – I have started reading Queenie – I am only 25 pages in, but so far I really like it. I am very curious where the book is going. I may not read much more tonight. I am about to do a post on my TBR for The Reading Rush, which starts on Monday. Yep, back-to-back readathons!

22.33 – Leaving it at this today – I am very happy that I managed to finish The One today.

On a side note, we have been having fun watching The Fresh Prince of Bel Air for the first time in 25 year or whatever and man, it’s still funny. Sadly, episode six of the first season, where Will and Carlton get stopped by police in their dad’s lawyer friend’s Mercedes is still way too relevant today… Carlton’s realisation at the end of the episode that he had been stopped because of the colour of his skin was pretty heartbreaking.

It’s 25 years later and not enough has changed…

Goodnight. L x
