Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend and future king, Mather—she would do anything to help Winter rise to power again. So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore their magic, Meira decides to go after it herself, only to find herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics—and to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.

This is one of those stories that is fairly predictable, but the pace kind of pulls you through so easily it ends up being pretty enjoyable anyway.
One thing I can say about this one is that I had no time to be bored. It read very easily and just kept moving forward, which was something I actually really appreciated.
This was very readable YA fantasy with displaced royalty and a quest of sorts. Good vs evil. Light vs dark. All that standard, but good stuff, that I do tend to love. The tropes and the story did not really do anything out of the ordinary and the characters might not have had quite the depth I tend to like, but if you are looking for a fast fun story, you could do worse than picking up this one. It would be a good one to try and revamp your reading mojo.
Although I enjoyed this one, I am unlikely to continue the series for now. I am happy where the story ended and I feel comfortable leaving it there. This book will go on my unhaul pile, but with a oddly fond smile.
