Pym, Barbara - Quartet in AutumnWhat am I currently reading?

I am currently reading Quartet in Autumn by Barbara Pym. It is one of the four books by Barbara Pym I bought from the charity shop last month. I am only 40 odd pages in, but I am enjoying it. It is about four people in their sixties, about to retire. It is not a something I usually read about, which makes it quite interesting. It’s only a small book. so hopefully it won’t take me too long, though I am still a bit slumpy and I am going through books at half my normal pace.

I have paused Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell. In my slumpy state, Victorian books are not what I need.

What did I recently finish reading?

I finished Foxes Unearthed earlier today. It was on my TBR many times over the last year, but I never ended up reading it, but this time I did. Partly for Non-Fiction November. I really loved it!

Before that I finished A Thousand Doors, which is an anthology of a variety of lives with the same main character. I though the stories were good, but it was not what I expected.

What do I think I will read next?

My next non-fiction read will probably be Seabiscuit by Laura Hillenbrand, which would be a re-read for me. I loved it the first time I read it many years ago, so hopefully I will love it just as much this time around! My next fiction read is The Path of Daggers, which is the next book in my epic Wheel of Time re-read. So yes, two re-reads!

Rowling, J K - Harry Potter #3 and the Prisoner of AzkabanWhat am I currently reading?

I started Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban yesterday. I have read it once before, but it was a long long time ago and I really don’t remember much. I remember the movie, but not the book. I am 50 odd pages in and I am enjoying it quite a bit so far. I feel like Rowling’s writing really improved in this one. So far so good.

King, Stephen - MiseryWhat did I recently finish reading?

I finished Stephen King’s Misery yesterday. I thought it was a good read. Unsettling and hair raising without being too scary. I would like to read some more Stephen King in the future. I am sure I read one of his books before, but I can’t remember which one and I think it left me pretty cold. This one gets a thumbs up though!

What do I think I will be reading next?

Not sure. I have two classics on my TBR this month: Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell (which I already started, got 50 pages in, and decided to pause it as I wasn’t in the mood) and The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. I may give Wives and Daughters another go. Otherwise I may read Bird Box by Josh Malerman, which is another that’s on my TBR for this month. No fixed plans as of yet, but it may be one of those…. or something else altogether. 🙂

What am I currently reading?

I have been  reading one book at a time for a while now. I find it more relaxing that way. I used to always have two or three books on the go, but actually this is working for me right now. The book I am reading at the moment is Empress Wu: Rise by the collaborative writers’ collective Peachill. The novel is set in China and is the fictionalised account of the life of Empress Wu, who was born in 624. I have to say, I am really enjoying this novel. It’s very unembellished and straightforward, which makes it a vey easy read. I hope to finish it today.

What did I recently finish reading?

I finished Frankenstein by Mary Shelley on Monday. I am glad I finally read that one, but was not blown away by it. I also finished The Angel in the Glass by Alys Clare over the weekend. That was a good read, but again I did not quite love it.

What do I think I will read next?

I think I will read The Return of the King, the last book in The Lord of the Rings trilogy by JRR Tolkien, next. After that, depending on my mood, I might read one of the Victober books. Probably Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell.

Clare, Alys - The Angel in the GlassWhat am I currently reading?

I have started The Angel in the Glass by Alys Clare today. It’s a murder mystery novel set in Devon (England) in 1604. This is a NetGalley ARC. I read one of Alys Clare’s other books and really enjoyed it, so requested this one. It has a nice feel to it so far – it seems a perfect autumn read!

What did I recently finish reading?

I am getting better at DNFing books, so I have DNFd The Curious Matter of Men With Wings by R Rutledge Hammes. Other people seem to love it, but I read about 16% and just did not get on with it.

I finished Witch Wraith by Terry Brooks yesterday evening. It was ok, but the ending felt rushed and there were a couple of issues. That was a 4* read for me. I also finally sat down today and soaked up the glorious pages of The Lost Words, which has poetry about the natural world by Robert Macfarlane and beautiful illustrations by Jackie Morris. This book is soooooo beautiful. I gave it 6 stars.

What do I think I will read next?

Not sure. It depends on how long it takes me to read The Angel in the Glass. My next NetGalley deadline is not until 25 October, so there is nothing I HAVE to read. I might to a TBR bag grab or if it does take me until the end of the month to finish it, I will pick one of the books on my October TBR.

What am I currently reading?

I am currently reading two books. I have started the 7th book of The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, A Crown of Swords. I am about 100 pages in (out of 730 or so). This is a re-read. I have also read about 80% of Things We Never Said by Nick Alexander. The latter is the last book on my August TBR. So far I have only good things to say about Things We Never Said. It is a very interesting book about family, grief and moving on.

What did I recently finish reading?

I finished The Artisan Heart by Dean Mayes, which I really enjoyed. It was a very understated book and I only realised when I had finished it how much I had enjoyed it.

I also read Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in the past week. This was a re-read, but it had been about fifteen years at least.

What do I think I will read next?

Not sure. I am thinking about my TBR for September and will probably post it soon. I have a few books I will definitely read in September, but I am not sure what I will start with. Maybe Matt Haig’s The Humans?

Watch this space!

So…Let’s see what’s happening in my reading life…

What am I currently reading?

I am halfway through Assassin’s Quest by Robin Hobb, the final book in the Farseer Trilogy, and I am 70 pages into Days of Blood and Starlight, the sequel to Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. I am loving the fierst and I am starting to get into the latter as well after having a bit of a trouble what happened in the first book in the beginning.

What did I recently finish reading?

The last books I finished were A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee (6 happy stars) and The Phantom Tree by Nicola Cornick (4 positive stars).

What do I think I will read next?

The books left on my TBR for this month are The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender, The Artisan Heart by Dean Mayes and The Things We Never Said by Nick Alexander. The last one I might carry into early September, but I am looking forward to all of these. I have been reading a lot of historical fiction and fantasy, so these will make a nice change! The Artisan Heart is set in Australia! Yay!

So…Let’s see what’s happening in my reading life…

Hughes, Glyn - RothWhat am I currently reading?

I have just picked up Roth by Glyn Hughes. It is a book I have had for twenty years and I have not read it yet, so it’s about time! It has no reviews on Goodreads at all, so I am not sure what to expect. I am only on page 5, and I feel like it could be decent.

\What did I recently finish reading?

I finished three books yesterday, though one of them was a short graphic novel and the other was a novella of only 106 pages.

The graphic novel (or graphic poem!) was Storm by Tim Minchin. I have always loved the beat poem and the animation this novel was adapted from, so it was pretty much a shoe-in that I would love it. I gave it six stars.

I also read Croakers, or more precisely Book One: Tomorrow, by Cindy L Grier. I requested this on NetGalley, because I love animal fiction. I did not realise it was only a short story (or a novella), but I did like it. I gave it four stars.

And finally I finished Between the Shade and the Shadow, by Coleman Alexander. This one was an author request and I am so happy I decided to read this one. I gave it five stars, as it took me about a third to get into it, but this world is so interesting and different! Once I was got sucked in, I did not want to leave! I have ordered a physical copy, as I like to support indie authors. I can’t wait for more books to come out set in this world.

What do I plan on reading next?

Tolkien, JRR - The Lord of the Rings 1 The Fellowship of the RingIn August I have a BookTubeAThon-inspired TBR and one of the challenges is to read a book and watch the movie adaptation. I finally decided I will be reading The Fellowship of the Ring (J R R Tolkien), which ties in nicely with a buddy read as well. It is a re-read, but it has been over ten years since I last read it, so I am actually really looking forward to reading it again.

What am I currently reading?

I am reading Bloodfire Quest, the second book in The Dark Legacy of Shannara series by Terry Brooks. I am trying to finish this before I go on holiday, as it’s a physical book and I don’t really want to take it.

I am also reading Buzz, by Thor Hanson, which is a non-fiction book about… well… buzzy bees. That one is pretty great so far, but it’s on my Kindle and I am neglecting it to try and finish Bloodfire Quest first. Can’t wait to continue it though.

What did I recently finish reading?

Well, I finished Lord of Chaos, the sixth book in The Wheel of Time Series by Robert Jordan. I crawled through the first half and flew through the final half. (Does it not have the most early 90s looking cover ever?!)

Jordan, Robert - The Wheel of Time 6 Lord of Chaos

What do I think I will be reading next?

I will be reading Little Maryam by Hamid Baig whilst on holiday. Also on my holiday list is When Dimple Met Rishi (Sandhya Menon) and The Bookseller of Kabul (Åsne Seierstad). Little Maryam and The Bookseller of Kabul (in Dutch) are paperbacks. Dimple is on my Kindle along with fifty more possibilities.

So…Let’s see what’s happening in my reading life…

What am I currently reading?

I have definitely picked up the pace with Lord of Chaos, the sixth book in The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. It is a re-read and I am slightly skimming some of the less interesting bits, as I know this was where the series was starting to drag for me last time. I seem to remember this one has a pretty good finale though…

I am also halfway through The King’s Witch by Tracy Borman. This was a novel I requested from NetGalley as I do enjoy historical fiction set at the English court. So far I am really enjoying this one. I love the main character, though I have a feeling she has some drama to come. 🙂

What have I recently finished reading?

Since last week’s post I have finished Windsworn, which was a really fun entertaining read and if you like YA fantasy full of adventure you may enjoy this one! I have also read The Fox of Richmond Park , an e-book I had picked up because of the fact it was about a fox and it mentioned Richmond Park, which is to the South West of  London, and I got married in the lodge there almost eight years ago. It started a bit iffy, but I really enjoyed it in the end. If you like your main character to be a fox, you may like this one!

What do I plan on reading next?

Next I want to get to some physical books before going on e-book overload whilst on holiday (I may take a paperback or two as well!). I want to read Little Maryam by Hamid Baig, which the author kindly sent me a copy of and which I have been meaning to read for a while. I have had a peak at the reviews, and they are pretty positive, so I am looking forward to that one. It is partly set in India and sounds like a really interesting read.

I also want to read Bloodfire Quest, the second book in The Dark Legacy of Shannara series, by Terry Brooks, before I go on holiday.

I finally seem to be picking up the pace a little readingwise, so let’s see what’s happening!

So…

What am I currently reading?

Currently I am reading Lord of Chaos (Robert Jordan), which is the sixth book in the Wheel fo Time series. I have been reading it for over a week, but only seemed to be managing a few pages at the time. I am going a bit quicker now and I feel like I am finally getting into the swing of things now with this book.

I have also started Windsworn by Derek Alan Siddoway, which was sent to me by the author and I have been meaning to read for ages. I finally picked it up I think this will be a pretty quick read. I read 20% last night on the first sitting. I am really enjoying it so far.

What did I recently finish reading?

I felt like some light fare, so I read What Kitty Did Next (Carrie Kablean), which was on my NetGalley list and is a continuation of Pride and Prejudice and a pretty well done one at that!. Then I went for Before We Met (Lucie Whitehouse), a domestic thriller that had been sitting on my shelf for a couple of months. They were both pretty good and hit the spot as far as light entertainment goes. Neither were too taxing on my brain, which is what I like when I am having a slow reading time.

What will I be reading next?

I will post a July TBR soon, but these are on that list:
