WWW Wednesdays: Christmas Day 2019

I have not done one of these in a couple of months, as I had not been reading much. I am pleased to report (Ha!) that my reading has picked up in the last few days, so there might be light at the end of the slumpy tunnel! Yay!

What am I currently reading?

I am currently about a third into the audio book of The Gathering Storm, which is book 12 in The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan (and the first one finished by Brandon Sanderson). This is a re-read and because of my slumpiness and a spare Audible credit I am listening to it. It’s ok. I don’t think the narration is the best though and I may transfer to reading if my reading has actually picked up.

I am also reading Christmas Cakes and Mistletoe Nights by Carole Matthews. I am reading that one on my Kindle and I am about 45% in. I am enjoying this one. I have read one of her books before and enjoyed it and since I wanted a Christmassy read, I decided to do this one.

What did I recently finish reading?

Shock, horror! I have actually finished a couple of books!

I finally finished reading Solid State: The Story of Abbey Road and the End of the Beatles by Kenneth Womack, which was a really interesting read, despite it taking me two months to read it. I have also just finished re-reading A Hidden Fire by Elizabeth Hunter last night. This is a urban fantasy that I have enjoyed in the past. On re-read it suffered a little bit, but it was still an entertaining enough read and I did like it. I will try and write and post my review today or tomorrow.

What will I be reading next?

I am mood-reading my way into 2020, so we will see…

WWW Wednesdays: 9 October 2019

The start of October has been a struggle to be honest. Not just with reading, but with life overall. I am suffering with quite a lot of anxiety at the moment and I can’t quite pinpoint why. Maybe it is simply the change of the seasons. It simply means I am finding it hard to concentrate on anything, including books!

I already skipped last week, so let’s give it a go this week!

What am I currently reading?

I am currently reading The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. It has only taken me many years to get to it! I am just over halfway and I am really enjoying it. It’s an excellent read. I had planned to finish it today, but considering that I have not read a single page yet today, I think it is pretty unlikely.

I am also still listening to The Iliad by Homer. I am 7 hours into the audio book with just under 15 hours still to go. I find with listening to it on audio book I don’t take in every single word, but I am getting the gist of it and the flow of the narrative well enough. I still prefer non-fiction audio books, but I do not think I would ever have gotten through The Iliad if I was physically reading it. I am confident I might finish it by the end of the month.

Ware, Ruth - The Death of Mrs WestawayWhat did I recently finish reading?

The only thing I finished was The Death of Mrs Westaway by Ruth Ware, which I enjoyed quite a bit. It was not perfect, but it was definitely a good read for this time of the year.

What do I think I will be reading next?

I might start Solid State by Kenneth Womack tomorrow as I need to start something new on my Kindle. The subtitle is ‘The Story of Abbey Road and the End of the Beatles‘ which sounds right up my street. I got that one via NetGalley and I am so looking forward to it! It is due to be published on 15 October.

As for my next fiction read, I am not sure. I may go for The Corset by Laura Purcell. Does that one not have the most gorgeous cover?

What am I currently reading?

I am 60 odd pages into Never Greener by Ruth Jones. Ruth Jones is a screenwriter and actress, particularly known for writing (and acting in the) comedy series Gavin & Stacy with James Corden. The book is ok so far. I liked the writing, but so far the plot makes me feel uncomfortable as there is a lot of cheating on spouses going on.

I am also listening to the audio book of The Iliad by Homer. I am about 4 hours in with 17 hours remaining, so it will take me a while. I wish I had a physical copy as well, so I could keep track of who the you-know-what they are talking about! I have been meaning to get to this one for ages, so I am happy to finally listen to it.

What did I recently finish reading?

Well, I finished Knife of Dreams by Robert Jordan today, book 11 in The Wheel of Time series. It was pretty good. There are so many characters and the world is so well thought out that it is truly impressive. It moves slowly but surely forward. Three books in this series to go. It is a re-read. 🙂

I finished my audio book, which was Becoming by Michelle Obama, shortly after posting my last WWW. Nothing but love for that woman.

Finally, I finished Ramona Blue, by Julie Murphy, which I really enjoyed as well.

It’s been a tricky week and some days I hardly read at all, but hopefully I can catch up on my TBR in the week ahead.

What will I be reading next?

The books left on my September TBR are Drift by Clare Littlemore and Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie. I am unlikely to be able to read both of those before the end of the month, but I guess miracles exist.

Apologies for being a rubbish blogger at the moment, but life is sort of getting in the way! I hope to catch up with all of you over the next week or so. Fingers crossed I will have a bit more time on my hands. IMG_1384-0

What am I currently reading?

I am about to finish Becoming by Michelle Obama, which I have been listening to on audio. I have only an hour to go, so I hope I will finish it today. I loved it!

I am almost 500 pages into Knife of Dreams, book 11 in The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. This is a re-read. About 300 pages left.

Finally, I am reading Ramona Blue by Julie Murphy, which I am also loving!

I am very tired today (after a very broken night sleep due to mice gnawing away in my ceiling!), so I doubt I will read much today.

What did I recently finish reading?

Since last Wednesday I have finished A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby, which I did not really like that much, and Sleep by C L Taylor, which was really good bar a few minor flaws.

What do I think I will be reading next?

Next I will read either Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie or Never Greener by Ruth Jones.

What am I currently reading?

I am currently reading Knife of Dreams, which is book 11 of The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. It is epic fantasy in the most epic of ways. I am enjoying this one, but I am taking it reasonably slowly. The book is almost 800 pages.

Alongside that one I am reading A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby. This is one of my Lingering Books. I am not quite halfway, and it’s ok. I don’t really like any of the characters very much and it is not quite grabbing me, but it is very readable.

Finally I am listening to Michelle Obama narrating Becoming. The more I listen to her the more I come to love and respect her. I am really enjoying it so far. I have listened to about 8 hours so far with about 12 hours remaining. I might finish it before the end of the month. Maybe…

What did I recently finish reading?

Since last Wednesday I have fiished listening to Walking Home by Clare Balding, which was really enjoyable. I finished A Polar Affair by Lloyd Spencer Davis, which was super interesting, and I finished Tin Man by Sarah Winman, which was also pretty good (and emotional). All in all, it has not been a bad week at all.

What do I think I will read next?

I will either pick up Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie, Never Greener by Ruth Jones or Sleep by C L Taylor. It just depends on my mood. All three are on my September TBR.

What am I currently reading?

I am about 35% into A Polar Affair by Lloyd Spencer Davis. It’s a NetGalley ebook about polar exploration and penguins. It’s good, but slow going.

I have just started reading Knife of Dreams by Robert Jordan, which is book 11 in The Wheel of Time series. Amazon is turning the series into a TV show, which should release in 2021. I can’t wait! So far, the casting looks good and Brandon Sanderson is involved, so I am confident I will love it!

Finally, I am listening to Walking Home by Clare Balding on audio. It’s basically a book about walking and it’s wonderfully quaint. I love Clare anyway and I listened to her previous book as well. She has a great voice to listen to. She is wonderful at describing the scenery and how it makes her feel. She goes off on tangeants as well about stuff that has nothing to do with walking and I can’t of enjoy that as well. I am listening now and she is going off on a story about Daphne Du Maurier!I am almost halfway now.

What did I recently finish reading?

Since last Wednesday I finished Eucalyptus (Murray Bail), which was wonderfully odd, and Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan, which was the equivalent of a soap opera, but mighty enjoyable.

What do I think I will read next?

Not sure. Knife of Dreams is a 800-page epic fantasy, so I may pick up something contemporary alongside it. Maybe Tin Man (Sarah Winman) or Home Fire (Kamila Shamsie).

What am I currently reading?

I have not read that much this past week. Not because I am slumpy, but because it simply has been a very busy week!

I have just picked Eucalyptus back up. I read ten pages so far today. It has that literary fiction quality to it. The writing is kind of distant and weird, but I think I like it. It could go either way.

I have also just picked up A Polar Affair by Lloyd Spencer Davis, which is a non-fiction book about penguins in Antarctica. Just what you want to read in summer! 😉

Finally, during the week I started listening to my first audio book of the year, which is Walking Home by Clare Balding. I listened to My Animals and Other Family by her quite a while ago and enjoyed it and this one has been sitting on my Audible for ages… I am a couple of chapters in and I am enjoying it for sure. She just has a great voice for listening to.

What did I recently finish reading?

I finished The Summer of Impossible Things by Rowan Coleman on Friday, which I absolutely loved. I finished Riders by Veronica Rossi this morning, which was not that great. Both were cover buys and one worked out, the other not so much.

What do plan on reading next?

I am not quite sure yet. I will concentrate on reading my current books as all are still at the beginning. I am putting together my September TBR together at the moment, so we will see…
